With her new collection in store, TANGS sits down with Michelle Lai of MISCHA to find out more about her!
Michelle’s journey with MISCHA has been a serendipitous one and not without a spark of madness. Her interest in fashion started at a very young age. In search for a way to make her mark, Michelle created The Travel Series in 2010, the first collection to feature the brand's signature hexagon print.
Who are you, Michelle Lai?
I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Growing up, I was particularly close to my grandmother, who was a really talented seamstress. She always ensured that the ladies of the household were impeccably dressed. Her attention to detail and hands-on approach was the basis of my artistic endeavours, leading to a personal goal to create a global lifestyle brand for women who are confident with their own personal style and to be contemporary and classic.
Can you define your style?
My personal style is classic with a modern twist. I like to dress comfortably and feminine, and appreciate good tailoring. The MISCHA woman I design for has a strong sense of her own individual style, whether it be work, play or holiday.
Who is your style icon?
I really admire Marion Cotillard, Liu Wen, Emily Blunt and Emma Watson.
Where do you find inspiration?
Mainly while I travel, I love to people watch as well as observe the style of the city because it opens up a different perspective for me. The Horizon Collection we're launching at TANGS was inspired by my last trip to Japan. I spent time by the seaside and observed the different phases of the sky; from dusk to dawn and used each of those as a new colourway.
What is your beauty routine?
I need at least 8 hours of sleep, Jurlique Rose facial moisturizer, Japanese drugstore brand liquid eyeliner, Bobbie Brown Shimmer Brick, Bare Essentials tinted moisturizer and Maybelline waterproof mascara.
What is your favourite piece in your dressing and why?
Definitely heels, they make you feel feminine and do wonders for your posture.
What is a must have this season?
I love the Overnighter. We brought it back after a few seasons and it's great for taking on flights.
What social/charitable causes are you passionate about?
I have a long-standing commitment to education and women's empowerment. I support two NGOs – The Women's Foundation and Mother's Choice. I would like to give back more this year, and will be launching a year-long fundraising campaign in collaboration with The Women's Foundation. We've designed MISCHA pins which will be sold to raise funds through corporates and individuals to raise awareness and support gender equality.
What is your wish for 2016?
To spend more time creating designs, new collaborations, expanding MISCHA, spend more time with friends, more travel, more love, and more laughter, more of everything!
