ATLANTIS
March 2011 – Embark on a mystical underwater quest with Island Shop this season, in search of the ancient lost kingdom of Atlantis. A voyage that explores the depths of the sea, to perchance meet a mermaid or two, and other exquisite creatures of the deep. Or perhaps the great Poseidon will beckon us to wander through his ocean palace, resplendent with corals, shells and other gems of the water. Behold the discovery that is Island Shop’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Atlantis.
Our underwater travels begin as we dive headfirst into the azure waters of the ocean, swimming alongside schools of Tropical Fish, awash in vivid, glowing colours from the natural richness of the sea, bold and luminous in fuchsia, burnt orange, indigo and emerald. Embrace the frothy texture of sea foam with tube dresses and jumpsuits in a bubble silhouette, or choose from pieces with intricate beading, charming patterns, and a shimmer of sequins like pearls along the ocean floor.
Then, we resurface from the deep and go aboard a great sail boat, a grand voyage with a sweeping panorama of the expansive ocean. Nautical meets natural as the sails unfurl - classic shades of navy, deep red and white are juxtaposed with the fluid arms of the Octopus and its circular tentacles. New laser-cutting techniques for clean lines are used alongside textured details like macramé and embroidery, a reflection of the richness of maritime heritage and seafaring adventures.
And from the safety of our trip afloat, we venture back into the deep, dark depths of the ocean, home to the magnificent Shark. Clean, simple silhouettes in bold, monochromatic tones and sleek, paper-cotton fabric call to mind the eerie gracefulness associated with this infamous predator. Pleats inspired by the gills of the shark, almost like the vents on sports cars, feature prominently on dresses and tops alike, and while simple, are the perfect partner to bold, statement accessories in silver.
The underwater odyssey concludes in a submerged garden of Corals and Shells, an oasis of serenity amidst an ocean teeming with energy and life. An enchanted carpet of coral reds, white, black and gold, where fluid fabrics like satin and jersey make up tiered dresses and long skirts bearing graphic prints inspired by intricate shells and corals. And so our magical quest through Island Shop’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Atlantis, ends as we leave the depths of the sea. As majestically as it rose from the waves, so quietly does it submerge again, laying quietly in wait for the next generation of worthy explorers.
